The
Aims and Ethos of Highgate School
Highgate School was established in 1565 by
a Royal Charter of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth
the First.
Our aim is to be the best independent coeducational
day school in London. In our three schools,
within the single Foundation, we aim to provide
an excellent all round education, which will
inspire our boys and girls to develop their
full potential wherever it may lie.
• We make the welfare and safety of
our pupils our priority, providing well-developed
and effective systems of pastoral care which
nurture a sense of belonging and provide
support for each individual.
• We promote academic excellence, by
offering first class teaching, facilities
and resources and by encouraging pupils to
aim high and to develop curiosity and independent
learning.
• We encourage pupils' creativity and
extend their horizons, offering a varied
and stimulating co-curricular programme
in the arts and sport, and a wide choice
of clubs, societies and activities.
• We conduct the School in a manner
consistent with the Christian values which
have always been central to our tradition,
fostering understanding and tolerance, reflecting
the diversity of modern London and encouraging
commitment to the wider community and an
awareness of the needs of others.
• We want to help our pupils to leave
the School having developed the personal
qualities which will prepare them well for
higher education and will equip them, as
citizens of the future, to make a positive
contribution in whatever life they choose
to follow.
