Highgate Pre-Preparatory School was established in 1993 by the Governors of Highgate School in response to strong local demand for a school of excellence to serve children in their first years of education.

Set within its own secure grounds, the Pre-Prep occupies a large and completely refurbished house in Bishopswood Road adjacent to twenty acres of playing fields. It can call on the expertise and resources of Highgate School, a Christian foundation established in 1565, of which it is an integral part.

The organisation of the school

While enjoying the facilities of its parent school, the Pre-Prep has the additional advantage of having its own Principal and team of staff who focus specifically upon the needs of children between the ages of three and seven.

Experienced class teachers are supported by assistants and qualified nursery nurses, while drama and instrumental music are taught by part-time specialists. Classes are small, with an average of sixteen pupils, ensuring that the children receive abundant individual attention.

The hundred and thirty pupils are distributed amongst eight classes and include a Nursery for three-year-old children and three pairs of classes for children aged four, five and six. The main point of entry to the school is the Nursery which is run by a teacher and two nursery nurses. Children attend either morning or afternoon sessions. The Nursery is self-contained with its own safe outside play area but the children take advantage of the amenities of the rest of the school, including the hall, technology room, library, and large playground.

Our approach

We aim to achieve high standards of learning within a happy, caring and stimulating environment. We believe that many parents contemplating independent education in the early years are looking for a school which will develop to the full their child's particular aptitudes and potential. We share these expectations and we will ensure that each child is provided with a range of challenges best suited to his or her abilities. We wish to establish at an early age self-confidence, independence, powers of expression, and enthusiasm for learning and an appreciation of what can be achieved through hard work. We also recognise the importance of play, of games and of fun. We wish girls and boys to enjoy their time at school, to have a sense of responsibility and to show consideration towards each other.

Contact with parents

A close working relationship between parents and staff enhances the children's confidence. Parents are always made to feel welcome in our school. They are invited to take part in the themes and projects that are studied by the children. Formal consultation evenings to discuss individual progress are held three times a year and at other times appointments can be arranged with the Principal and class teachers. There is a flourishing Parents Association to which all parents automatically belong.
