Aims
Highgate School was established in 1565 by a Royal Charter of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the First.

Our aim is to be the best independent coeducational day school in London. In our three schools, within the single Foundation, we aim to provide an excellent all round education, which will inspire our boys and girls to develop their full potential wherever it may lie.

• We make the welfare and safety of our pupils our priority, providing well-developed and effective systems of pastoral care which nurture a sense of belonging and provide support for each individual.

• We promote academic excellence, by offering first class teaching, facilities and resources and by encouraging pupils to aim high and to develop curiosity and independent learning.

• We encourage pupils' creativity and extend their horizons, offering a varied and stimulating co-curricular programme in the arts and sport, and a wide choice of clubs, societies and activities.

• We conduct the School in a manner consistent with the Christian values which have always been central to our tradition, fostering understanding and tolerance, reflecting the diversity of modern London and encouraging commitment to the wider community and an awareness of the needs of others.

• We want to help our pupils to leave the School having developed the personal qualities which will prepare them well for higher education and will equip them, as citizens of the future, to make a positive contribution in whatever life they choose to follow.

Staff
There are 125 teachers at the School (65 men, 60 women), all of whom are university graduates. 40% of Senior School teachers are graduates of Oxford or Cambridge. About 10% of all teachers have first class honours and about 15% have higher degrees.

Welcome pack
At the time a place is offered, or in the 'welcome pack' for new pupils, a range of documents is provided, including our standard Terms and Conditions, Complaints Procedure and ‘Notes for Parents on Religion’. We also have available information on matters such as Safeguarding and Welfare, the Curriculum, Safety on Educational Visits and the number of formal complaints registered in the previous school year. These are available on request from the Head Master’s office. The following two statements are amplified in this documentation:

a) Discipline & exclusions
Good behaviour is viewed as a necessary condition for effective teaching and learning to take place. School rules at Highgate are kept to a minimum. Our structure of rewards and sanctions provides a secure framework for the pupils and adults in the school. From the Nursery to Year 4 (Y4), children have six Golden Rules, which underpin daily life. Pupils from Y5 to Y13 are expected to follow the Code of Conduct. We aim to be fair and consistent and intend any sanctions used to be appropriate to the behaviour, which has occurred. The use of physical punishment is not allowed. Bullying and other unacceptable behaviour are always investigated. There are different levels of sanction, ranging from teacher warning to an appropriate form of detention for the age of child. Exclusion from school, in accordance with the School’s Terms and Conditions, can be a temporary withdrawal (‘suspension’) for a fixed term or a permanent exclusion, a last resort which only happens after thorough investigation and after parents have had prior notification and had the opportunity to make representations and been informed of the appeal arrangements. There are staff guidelines on Promoting good behaviour and sanctions for misbehaviour.

b) Pupils with ‘statements’ of educational need or for whom English is an additional language
We want all pupils at Highgate to realise their full potential and, to assist in this process, we offer professional learning support for those identified as requiring it. We also offer support to those who are particularly gifted and talented. If your child has a Statement of Needs prepared by the LEA, you must ensure you provide us with full details well in advance of the admissions procedure; the School works with LEAs to ensure that the provisions of any statements are addressed according to the relevant statutory requirements and the School’s contract with parents. The School conducts most of its teaching and learning in English and pupils whose mother tongue is not English are expected to be able to communicate effectively in spoken and written English. They are unlikely to gain admission if this is not the case. Any additional support decided upon thereafter would be via our qualified learning support department. Current parents and staff receive fuller notes and guidance on learning support matters.
