The Junior School (at present Years 3 to 8) has over 400 pupils and its teaching buildings are located in Bishopswood Road.

Field House is for 7-9 year-olds (Years 3 and 4) and Cholmeley for 10-13 year-olds (Years 5-8). The school is divided into three sections (Years 3 and 4, 5 and 6, 7 and 8) each with a senior teacher who oversees academic development and delivery of the curriculum in consultation with subject coordinators. There is a Deputy Principal who has both academic and administrative responsibility and an Assistant Principal who oversees pastoral and related areas of school life. These structures are designed to nurture learning in a supportive yet challenging environment and gives pupils experiences appropriate to their age.

All pupils study English, Maths, Science, History, Geography, Religious Education, Music, Art, Information and Communication Technology, Design Technology, Drama and also Physical Education and Games. French is taught from Year 4 and Latin from Year 7. Form Tutors will teach English and Maths to their forms in Years 3 to 5. Pupils are taught by specialist teachers in all subjects from Year 6. Programmes of study broadly follow the National Curriculum, but our pupils follow a wide ranging and enriched curriculum which will take them beyond this.

Activities

There is a rich and varied after school activities programme which currently includes drama, debating, film society, board games, flight simulator, ceramics and art, IT, swimming and martial arts. Pupils are encouraged to participate in this and our expectation is that all should choose to do at least one activity each week.

Music and Drama

There is a variety of choirs and orchestras which pupils can join. Concerts, both formal and informal take place throughout the year. All pupils take drama and there are a number of workshop and large productions performed each year.

Enrichment

We offer enrichment for gifted and talented pupils in Mathematics in Years 4 and 5 in partnership with a local primary school. We have extension classes in French as well as Maths in Years 7 and 8. The older pupils (Years 7 and 8) enter a national Maths Challenge which attracts around 400,000 participants. Highgate results are consistently high. Our aim is to challenge all the pupils to achieve their very best and for them to set themselves the highest goals.
