On Thursday 23rd November, Highgate School hosted the North London Qualifying Round of the ECF U19 National Chess Championships. Teams from 6 schools were competing for the right to participate in the knockout stages of this national tournament. Under the tutelidge of new chess coach Rob Willmoth, Highgate’s team of Noah (7G), Oliver (8H), Rory (9EG), Seb (7HP), Harry (11EG) and Ibrahim (7DS) began the day still celebrating from their recent success in the ECF Team Chess Challenge, in which they qualified for the National Final (held at Imperial in April) ahead of some much higher graded teams. The Sir Martin Gilbert Library was a fine setting for a chess competition, and the tournament did not disappoint. With victory over Fortismere and the North London Collegiate B team in the opening two rounds qualification was confirmed for the Highgate A team, before just losing to the highest graded team in the tournament, NLCS A team. The Highgate B team of Michael, Marcus, David, Vera, Thomas, Emma and Shiv narrowly missed out on qualification, having defeated Mill Hill in the opening round.

In House Chess victory went to Westgate, whose team of Laura, Ton and Ross defeated Queensgate 3-0 on the final day to prise the trophy from holders Eastgate. Next term we look forward to the Year 7 and 8 inter-form competition.
