On 23 August, 39 pupils from Year 7 into Year 8 and 5 teachers from the MFL and Maths departments embarked on a long journey by road and ferry to Avranches and the bilingual activity centre at Chateau de la Baudonnière.

The programme lasted for six days and was enjoyed by all involved. It included raft building, an assault course, orienteering, wall climbing, Astroballe (a mixture of basketball and trampolining), archery, initiative runs, juggling and theme evenings, bread-making as well as some French lessons incidentally to culminate into a talent competition on the last night.

All pupils came back happy if a little bit tired from the journeys in the knowledge that all activities had been perfectly understood, followed and carried out in the target language and that their French had improved tremendously.

The Bayeux tapestry was, as usual, a hit as well as the exotic market in Villers-Cottage with its live ducks, hamsters and chickens as well as its outlandish fashion items. Our London fashionistas did not hesitate to haggle in French and bring back the most daring items of clothing which might become compulsory buys in the West End one day.

My thanks go to all the pupils for contributing to make the trip so enjoyable and to my colleagues who gave up their time to run this ongoing venture. So, thanks to Miss Church, Miss Gardiner, Dr Marcus and Mr Pearce for their cheerful and professional presence. PLB, photos by LAP
