Globe Theatre Visit

On Thursday 22 April pupils in Year 4 took part in an inspirational workshop at the above institution with the aim of exploring plays whilst becoming informal learners in the process of observation and participation; an objective encapsulated by John Marston’s preface to The Malcontent in which he apologises ‘that Scenes invented, merely to be spoken, should be enforcively published to be read’ and asks that the play ‘be pardoned, for the pleasure it once afforded you, when it was presented with the soul of lively action’.

Pupils were encouraged to respond to Shakespeare’s plays as stories to be shared between actor and audience, and to experiment with the sounds and rhythms of Shakespeare’s language.

The workshop also supports the National Curriculum study at KS2 and is a useful tool in augmenting classroom work on literacy, English and understanding the arts by looking at the architectural side of this national treasure as well as all paraphernalia associated with thespians.

Thanks to Miss Stokes for organising the successful trip.  VN
