Go Green Week

The week beginning Monday 21 September saw the whole of the Junior School taking part in a fantastic event called ‘Go Green Week’. The idea was that through teaching a themed week across the curriculum, the children would be encouraged to join together to take a step towards a greener lifestyle.

In addition to various teaching and learning activities (making ball and catchers out of empty plastic milk bottles, making recycled paper, making a football out of recycled plastic bags; a walking tour in the vegetable allotments– investigating water collection, composting; talk on food waste, food journeys and seasonal food), the focus for the week was making persuasive writing about sustainable development.

Each year group studied and wrote on a different focus, such as energy, water, waste, transport. A couple of year group representatives presented their persuasive argument to the other years in our whole school assembly. Pupils also rehearsed and performed a short musical called ‘Compost’.

We also ran a ‘Green Feet’ campaign where the children thought about the steps they could make towards a greener Britain and recording these on the back of a green footprint (e.g. to walk to school one day a week or recycle more at home or use a watering can instead of a hose to water the garden).

As well as collecting as many green footprints as possible from pupils, parents and teachers, on Wednesday 23 September the school to organized a ‘Share and Wear’ Bring and Swap Sale. The idea was for the children to ‘recycle’ clothing, thus reinforcing the message within their peer groups.

Finally, Wednesday 23 September was also a ‘Low Carbon Day’ across the Foundation. The aim was everyone to walk or cycle to school. Everyone came in non-uniform, wearing green. Children donated £1.00 for the privilege and the proceeds were used to purchase an energy efficient light bulb for each child to take home and use.

Many thanks to Ms Nicholson for organizing the above event and to students, parents and staff for their support and input.  VN
