Joûtes Oratoires

The North London French Debating Competition Joûtes Oratoires took place on Tuesday evening in Central Hall for 40 Year 13 pupils from all round London and Hertfordshire. Representing Highgate School were two teams: Simon Lack and Jack Light, and Jake Goodman and Ben Joseph. The latter pair got through to the semi-finals and were really unlucky not to get to the final and win! They were narrowly beaten (on a technicality) by Wycombe Abbey, whose girls went on to win the final. The debating competition aims to develop oral skills in pupils studying French at A2 level, and this year saw a remarkable level of oral French. SJB

The seven motions from the competition were:

6. Google devrait remplacer l’éducation traditionnelle
7. L’université devrait être gratuite
