Laureate Visit

Children's Laureate Anthony Browne, illustrator and author of children’s fiction as well as picture books, visited Highgate Junior School on Wednesday 19 May 2010. Mr Browne creates strongly narrative visualizations by blending near-photographic realism with fantastical, surreal touches and ingenious visual puns. His cunning and exquisite use of colour, pattern and background detail subtly conveys empathy for his lonely and sensitive protagonists – humans and apes, respectively. The author’s most notable books include the following titles: Gorilla, Into the Forest, Little Beauty, My Dad, My Mum, Silly Billy, Voices in the Park, A Walk in the Park, Willy the Wimp.

To celebrate picture books and story times at their best, we have invited Highgate Pre-Preparatory School as well as Highgate Primary School with the Blanche Nevile department for children with impaired hearing to join us on the day. VN

'I hope to encourage more children to discover and love reading, but I want to focus particularly on the appreciation of picture books, and the reading of both pictures and words. Picture books are for everybody at any age, not books to be left behind as we grow older. The best ones leave a tantalising gap between the pictures and the words, a gap that is filled by the reader's imagination, adding so much to the excitement of reading a book.' Anthony Browne, Children’s Laureate 2009 -2011
