Lyttelton Competition

On Thursday 7 October, the English Department enjoyed a return to the newly-refurbished Dyne House Auditorium in order to celebrate this year's National Poetry Day with the final of the annual Lyttelton Competition for the public declamation of verse. Selected from over 500 hopefuls, the 28 finalists provided an enthusiastic audience with polished and sophisticated declamations, making decisions very difficult for the two judges, Head of English, Gordon Catherwood, and Director of Drama, Juliet Fehr. Both agreed that the pupils had provided us with the highest quality of entries we have ever had. In the end, the winners were:

Junior Verse

Bruce Allinson 7A, reading 'Jim' by Hilaire Belloc
Lily Kuenzler 8G, reading  'Dulce Et Decorum Est' by Wilfred Owen

Intermediate Verse

Vicente Macia-Kjaer 10SH, reading 'Song for a Birth of a Death' by Elizabeth Jennings
Finn Strivens 10KG, reading 'Red Veined Doc' by Alice Oswald

Senior Verse

Jake Goodman 13NG, reading 'Eaten by Butterflies' by Charles Bukowski
Henry Zeffman 12TL, reading 'Slough' by John Betjeman

Eager not to be outdone by the pupils, eight members of staff gathered in the Drama Studio at lunchtime on Friday 8th October to compete in the inaugural Staff Lyttelton Competition. Teachers from a range of disciplines tried their best to impress the discerning pupil judges (with an equally diverse range of subject specialisms), Rosalia-Myttas-Perris 13TL, Toby Sharpe 12QG, Henry Zeffman 12TL and Oliver Zeffman 13TL. The winners were Miss McLoughlin (English/9KG), reading Carol Ann Duffy's 'Prayer', and Ms Saunders (English/8A), reading Edna St. Vincent Millay's 'Sonnet 2'.  KLK
