Maths Enrichment
On Wednesday last week sixty year 8 pupils from seven different Haringey schools engaged in a day of mathematical enrichment at Highgate School. The theme of the day was a topical investigation of various voting systems. The highlight of the day took place after lunch in Garner quad where the pupils engaged in a practical demonstration of run-off voting to select their preferred dessert, an election which was just won by the chocolate pudding. Pupils enjoyed meeting and working with their peers from other schools in small groups and were also grateful for the assistance they received from a number of year 10 mathematicians whose help in running the day was invaluable. The event was a first attempt to get mathematically inclined pupils from a range of different backgrounds and schools together and, following the very positive feedback received from the pupils involved, it will not be the last.
Thanks to Mr Wilne, Ms Wherity and Ms Gardiner for planning and running the activities, and also to the Junior School staff for accommodating us throughout the morning. DJA
