On the Nose

Incroyable: the Pottier-Plaistowe production of Edmond Rostand’s Cyrano de Bergerac pulled off the singular feat of making many of us non-linguists in the audience forget we were watching a play in French. So natural was the delivery by the actors, so deft the touches of humour, so poignant the final atmosphere – and so alarmingly realistic the sword-fighting – that we were in absolutely no doubt of the play’s wit and tragic insights. The story of unrequited love and the importance of being articulate was told with sparkling humour throughout. Special hat-doffing must go to Omer Tiroche whose stage presence and linguistic panache might have been made for the role of Cyrano; while Jake Goodman, Sasha Hajnal-Corob and a dastardly Ben Joseph added great depth to the entertainment. Many congratulations to all involved. VLS, photos by RER
