RAF Hendon Visit

On Thursday 28 January, Year 6 spent a day at RAF Hendon exploring paraphernalia relating to aviation and the Second World War.

The emphasis of the trip was to experience life as a child in wartime Britain and to understand its impact on young lives. The pupils had the chance to go back in time for a 1940s lesson in a wartime classroom and have first-hand experience in making gas masks, using exercise books, filling in an evacuee label and a National Identity Card with a dip pen and ink well. The occasional raid siren added extra realism to the experience.

A film called Our Finest Hour took the audience back to London in the 1940s to learn about the Battle of Britain and the Blitz.

The children also had the chance to look at aircraft through time with a particular focus on the types used by the RAF and the Luftwaffe during the war.

A vast array of interactive units exploring the properties of air, forces, light, electricity and materials were enjoyed by the children in the  Aeronauts Interactive Centre.

Mrs Rutterford organized the above experience, enriching the Humanities Curriculum.  VN
