70% ‘A’ grades at A Level – a record year!

The school gained its highest ever percentage of A grades at A Level. 341 out of the 485 papers taken (70.3%) were awarded an A grade; an increase of 13% on 2008, well above national ‘grade inflation’. 81 pupils gained (54%) three or more A grades. The average UCAS points score for A Level and AS for our leaving year was a school record at 397 points.

80% of those taking Economics gained grade A; the highest grade was also obtained by 78% of those who took English Literature and by 76% of those who took Mathematics. 91% of candidates taking Latin and Further Mathematics gained A grades, as did 90% of those taking Spanish. In addition all candidates taking Classical Civilisation, German, Greek, Russian, Politics and Philosophy gained either an A or a B grade. The school has maintained its success in the so-called hard subjects. Bucking the national trends in science entries, over a quarter of the 485 papers sat were in science with 94% of grades awarded at A – C.

The continuing success of co-education at Highgate is highlighted by the fact that 95.9% of the grades obtained by the girls who joined us in the Sixth Form were either grade A or B.

84% of leavers who applied to university appear to have secured their first choice place with a further 6% holding an insurance offer; the school will be contacting admissions tutors as usual to establish whether the remaining leavers have been offered places, either at their first choice university or through clearing.

School record broken at GCSE

I am delighted to report that our Year 11 pupils have broken the school record at GCSE – by a whisker – for A and A* grades: 81.5%, or 1016 of the 1251 papers taken, were graded A or A*; the A* percentage was 42.8. The number of A* and A grades exceeded 90% in all three sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics) and in Mathematics, as well as in French, German, Russian, Music, and Religious Studies. 26 pupils out of 130 gained 8 or more A* grades.
