Royal Free Visit

A large group of Year 12 pupils went to see an exhibition of pathology at the Royal Free hospital which was held to celebrate National Pathology Week. The pupils were able to find out about the work of pathologists at the hospital and the career choices available. Many of our pupils are interested in medicine but don’t know much about pathology. It was a fascinating experience for them to see find out how pathologists work as part of a team to diagnose and treat patients.

The pupils saw exhibits showing how cholesterol clogs up the arteries, what salmonella looks like under a microscope, performed a ‘urine’ test (using apple juice) and had a chance to see if their hands were really clean using a glo-box – a device used on the wards to help promote good infection control practices. They listened to talks on swine flu by Dr Sowole and how to look after your heart by the Royal Free’s consultant chemical pathologist Dr Devi Nair.  JCYW
