Site Visit
On Wednesday 19th of January, a selection of Year 11 and Year 12 pupils, along with Mr Thomson, Mr Aston and Nick Ward were taken on a tour around the building site of the new teaching building in Garner. The tour was taken by site managers Don McCarthy and Paul Knight and accompanied by Gwyn Jones and Stephen Freeth of the Capital Projects Team. The pupils found out that the new building will contain 10 general classrooms, one ICT suite, a science lab and offices, while 3 additional classrooms will be built onto the roof of the existing Garner Building. It will have a 3 story elevation on North Road; however there will also be a set-back third floor and a semi-basement, effectively giving the building 5 stories. The building will have an energy efficient heating and ventilation system using air source heat pumps which absorb heat from the outside air, and heat recovery units which recover heat from within the building.
The building is predominantly a concrete frame structure with steel frame sections, and the pupils saw that the majority of concrete had been poured, and the builders are now focusing on the brickwork. We were able to look around all the floors, and even went on top of the roof to see the construction method in use there. Pupils asked a range of questions from the damp proof membrane to the strength of the structural concrete and to what 1matr stands for and were also surprised by the amount of space in the building. The pupils gained a greater enthusiasm and interest for engineering in construction. NRW
