Steven Butler Visit
On Friday 6th May, Years 3 & 4 filled Caen Wood Hall to listen to debut author Steven Butler discuss his new book The Wrong Pong, published on May 5th 2011. Historically, Steven has worked as a circus performer and an actor, so the children were mesmerised and highly amused by tales of his naughty sister and his famous headmaster Jeremy Strong.

Steven explained how the idea for his tale about a young boy named Neville, who becomes accidentally mistaken for a troll and who tries to find his way back to his former life as a human, began life. Steven actively demonstrated how the illustrations of the troll family were developed and how the story grew. A lot of the inspiration for this unusual tale came from personal experience, to which the children howled with laughter.

At the end of the presentation, Steven asked the children to pull “troll faces” and chose the three most imaginative attempts to be photographed with him. Steven is going to place these on his website.

The children really enjoyed the visit and Steven has promised to return to tell us about his new book, The Wrong Pong, Holiday Hullabaloo, in the autumn. Authors with Steven’s charisma, energy and zest for life really inspire the children to become authors one day themselves. PC
