Tudor Times

On Monday 10 May, the Freshwater Theatre Company entertained Year 3 pupils with their interactive drama session on the Tudors, encouraging children to be part of the action and to explore history in a fun and creative way. The story unfolded with the Time Traveller's machine breaking down and crashing in 1500AD. Before reaching 1600AD, the Time Traveller encountered a variety of historical Tudor characters - a beggar, a lady-in-waiting, an executioner, Henry VIII, a country peasant, a royal courtier, Sir Francis Drake, Sir Walter Raleigh and Queen Elizabeth I. The many problems faced by the Time Traveller during this turbulent flashback were solved by the pupils - before returning to the present day together.

The two-person show was packed with memorable characters, fun and educational activities examining the Tudor era, whilst creating links to cross-curricular Humanities topics at KS2.

The variety of drama and teaching techniques such as improvisation, tableaux, co-operative games, song, dance, movement, storytelling, Q&A as well as examining and handling artefacts and props were used creatively and effectively in the session. The entertaining event was organised by Andrea Rutterford.  VN
