Waterlow Park Visit
On Wednesday 9 June, Year 3 pupils visited Waterlow Park, Highgate’s hidden botanical gem. The park contains a variety of habitats for study and exploration including a meadow area, ponds, formal parkland, mature trees and a small conservation area. They all form part of the concept of plants and animals as the basis of habitats and the connections between people and the natural environment.
The pupils participated in a workshop on growing plants, examining the concept of soil types as well as the symbiosis of organic matter. The theoretical part of the visit included a talk on the dependence of plants on soil, light, nutrients; underpinned by a practical session on examining plants, measuring soil moisture levels and the amount of light in various habitats, as well as the deployment of quadrants to figure out plant density in designated parts of the park.
The pupils have also had the chance to explore the park at their leisure; as an important recreational and educational resource on the school’s doorstep.
This enjoyable and informative trip was organised by Alison Worland. VN
