Y5 Kenwood Visit

Year 5 pupils took part in a discovery session on Victorian family life with emphasis on the grand premises of Kenwood House – a rare opportunity to look behind the scenes in an interactive workshop. Hands-on activities, games and discussions further encouraged children to investigate what it would have been like to be part of a typical Victorian family and to maintain self-sufficiency by relying on on-site resources.

By investigating people's lives and lifestyles over a century ago, pupils looked at history in a variety of ways both in depth and in overview. They learnt that the past can be represented and interpreted in different ways and by using historical vocabulary to describe events, people and developments the past can be brought to life and made relevant to contemporary issues.

The pupils learnt where food came from and what was eaten by the different elements of society and how preparation and the cooking process were carried out in a systematic way, following period recipes that modern-day counterparts are derived from.

Thanks to Mr Allan and Mrs Robertson for organizing the trip. VN
