Community Service
Many of our pupils served in the local community in 2007 – 08. For example, as part of the qualification for a Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, nearly a hundred pupils worked with primary schools, charity shops and organisations such as the Harrington Scheme. Under the banner of The Year 9 Community Programme, each of the 129 pupils in Year 9 spent one day off-timetable helping in a local primary school, a charity shop, a care home or a church. Over a thousand hours were spent working in the community, and feedback from both hosts and participants was very positive. The range of help offered was wide, from taking a centenarian for a walk in Highgate Woods and putting up shelves in a primary school, to cleaning windows in a church and playing bingo with care home residents. Some of the pupils have continued to volunteer, as a direct result of this programme.
