Educational Summer Schools
Windows of Discovery was a summer school (July 9th to 11th) run jointly at Highgate School by Highgate and University College School. Aimed at primary school pupils in Year 4 in the boroughs of Haringey and Camden, the programme of activities, with an over-arching theme of Exploration, complemented the provision for Gifted and Talented pupils that schools already offer. Lessons and workshops were taught and led by members of both schools’ staff, and also some Year 11 pupils.
The Chrysalis Scheme is an ambitious project to bring a university access scheme to Gifted and Talented pupils in Years 10 and 12 in the London boroughs of Haringey and Camden. The centrepiece of the programme is an intensive summer school, which offers subject-specific tutorials, expert and inspiring lectures, visiting admissions tutors and university ambassadors, employer visits, and undergraduate mentoring. This year the summer school took place over four days at the end of August, and 82 students participated. Highgate staff taught lessons in ten subjects. We are delighted that Lynne Featherstone, MP for Hornsey and Wood Green, attended the Chrysalis launch on June 20th 2008 and wholeheartedly endorsed the project.
