As an independent school, we have the freedom to set our own agenda, and we believe that we should use this freedom in our work with local state schools, to our mutual benefit. Thanks to generous donations Highgate has been able to employ 4.5 Full Time Equivalent (FTE) members of teaching staff and a full-time Partnership Teaching Coordinator to develop partnership teaching projects. This includes seventeen teachers in the Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry departments working on joint projects with a range of local primary and secondary schools. For the first time in 2014 we have appointed two Chrysalis Fellows who, this year, are former Highgate student mentors considering careers in teaching and engineering. In future years we plan to open recruitment to pupils from our Chrysalis partner schools. We devise projects in partnership with more than forty schools across London, and these projects aim to enhance and develop teaching and learning in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) for all pupils and teachers involved.

Exceptionally well-qualified graduates in STEM subjects are being attracted to join the teaching staff at Highgate because of the strength of our Chrysalis Partnership. They want to use their talents and experience to reach pupils beyond our walls, and to work in true partnership with teachers in our partner schools.

Service is in our DNA: the more we invest in partnership teaching, the greater impact we will have not just on pupils and teachers in our partner schools, but also on our own pupils, many of whom work as mentors with pupils from partner schools in a variety of enrichment activities. These experiences enable our pupils to understand the importance of helping others, whilst at the same time teaching them about themselves.

Donors support Chrysalis Partnership Teaching in various ways:

•    Gifts from The Ogden Trust and other donors support the work of two Physics teachers, both of whom spend 50% of their timetable working with partner schools
•    Gifts from individual donors support the work of a team of Maths teachers at Highgate working for the equivalent hours of two full-time teachers across Haringey, Camden, Islington, Brent and Enfield.
