Sir Roger Cholmeley's Charity
A registered charity, no. 312765
Since 1565, Highgate School and the London around it has seen many changes. One aspect of the School, however, has always remained constant: we are a charity, and every generation of Cholmeleians (as we call our former pupils) and their teachers has been committed to living up to what that means, to strengthening and building on our charitable foundations. We have given considerable time and thought to what the privilege of being a charity means to us, and we have explored our developing ideas with a number of former pupils, current and former parents, and our partners in the local community.

The original objectives of Sir Roger Cholmeley’s School at Highgate (a registered charity, no. 312765), to give the School its full name, are ambitious but straightforward:

  • “the advancement of education by the provision of a school in or near Highgate, the provision of incidental or ancillary educational activities, and the undertaking of associated activities for the benefit of the public;

  • in so far as the Governors think fit (and so long as they in their discretion consider that the first object is being properly provided for) the relief of the poor.”

In this section of our website you can read how we are interpreting these principles as Highgate School heads towards – and looks beyond – the 450th anniversary of its founding.

To do so we are launching a fundraising campaign. Already Cholmeleians and current and former parents have given donations to support our ambitions. Let me say now there is no such thing as too small a gift: every gift has an impact, every gift makes a difference. This is venture philanthropy: you can choose to make a philanthropic investment, and you can be certain that there will be a long-lasting and far-reaching return on your investment. That return will be, quite simply, transformed lives.
