Variations on a Russian Theme
THIS YEAR'S CONCERT IN CADOGAN HALL WAS A CELEBRATION OF RUSSIAN MUSIC, POEMS AND ARTWORK
This year's flagship Michaelmas Concert took place at international concert venue Cadogan Hall and showcased a range of notable Russian repertoire performed at a very high level by several of the school's senior instrumental and choral ensembles.
Entitled Variations on a Russian Theme, the concert included key works including movements from Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker, tone poems by Mussorgsky and Borodin and variations by Arensky alongside Tavener's Svyati and Duke Ellington's take on Tchaikovsky's music; every performance shone and contributed to what was an exceptional concert and culmination of a lot of hard work on the part of the 150+ pupils performing. Performances were also interspersed with the declamation of Russian poems read by pupils, and the programme featured a range of Russian artwork as selected by Mr. Virji to add to a highly enjoyable cultural celebration of Russian art in this centenary year of the 1917 revolution.
