On Tuesday, the music department was privileged to receive a visit from Sir Thomas Allen, one of Britain’s leading baritone singers and an established star of the great opera houses of the world. From 4.00pm until 6.30pm, he tirelessly led a masterclass with Highgate singers, giving feedback on their superb performances and insider tips on how to project a voice to fill Wembley Stadium. Following the masterclass, at 7.00pm, he gave a Parkinson-style chat show interview with Ms Rivlin who also accompanied him singing the following pieces; Auf ein altes Bild by Hugo Wolf, Limehouse Reach by Michael Head, Deh, Vieni alla finestra from Mozart’s Don Giovanni and Non piu andrai from Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro. He then gamely answered questions from pupils, parents and teachers. It was an unforgettable day for the music department, and for all those who attended both events. Sir Thomas Allen was also the performer who inspired the Billy Elliot story by Lee Hall – an incredible claim to fame leaving us all in awe.
