With a focus on politics, it seems fitting that our final Old Cholmeleian Business Section networking event for this academic year took place at the House of Commons.

With OCs and pupils from Highgate and partner schools in attendance, ‘A life in Politics’ saw OCs working across the sector talk about their experiences, before answering questions on a range of issues. There were contrasting opinions on the merits of student politics, debates as to whether first-past-the-post is still an effective system, and discussions about our responsibilities as members of the ‘political class’. In addition, any evening themed around politics could not escape discussions of Brexit, not least with former EU Commissioner, Jonathan Hill, sitting on the panel!

After audience questions, there was an opportunity for informal networking with pupils chatting to panellists and other OCs. Following this, our OCs enjoyed catching up and sharing memories at a nearby pub.

Especial thanks to our fantastic Year 12 moderator, Ralph, and our panellists: Sheyda Monshizadeh-Azar (HG 2007), Regional Communications Officer at Labour Party; Sebastian Damberg-Ott (WG 2008), Senior Policy Adviser at UK Home Office; Azmina Siddique (SG 2008), Policy Advisor at The Tony Blair Institute for Global Change; Adam Jogee (FG 2010), Labour Member for Hornsey on Haringey Council; and Lord Jonathan Hill of Oareford (NG 1973), CBE, PC, Conservative politician and former European Commissioner for Financial Stability, Financial Services and Capital Markets Union.

Ms Salima Virji, Development Director, said: ‘We now look forward to September, when we begin the next series of OCBS events. In order to ensure a varied programme, it is planned that most sectors will gather every two years. So, after the success of creative arts, law, media, finance, entrepreneurship, medicine and politics, we are planning for the following in the next academic year: DTE, sport, architecture and construction, engineering, creative arts: music and theatre, and law section: keynote speaker.

‘Many thanks to all OCs who have supported these events, it has been fantastic to meet so many of you and witness so many people reconnecting. As ever, if you have ideas for future events, or knowledge of any OCs that you would like to nominate as a panellist, please email our Development Office on: OC@highgateschool.org.uk.’
