Highgate’s annual Act of Remembrance took place today, with a service of readings and music from Senior School pupils to mark the occasion.
Members of the Highgate Combined Cadet Force (CCF) provided ceremonial support for the event, with Heads of School Jiya and Henry taking on their first major public role of the year. Henry read out a message from the Royal British Legion and Jiya presented a reading of In Flanders Fields by John McCrae.
Sara, Colour Sergeant for the CCF during Monday’s Act of Remembrance, said: “It was a profound honour to lead the colour party for Remembrance today. For every member of the CCF, it is a moment of pride and great responsibility as we take part in this significant event for the CCF calendar. The dedication from the colour party over the last few weeks has only made us think more deeply about the commitment of those currently serving.”
Yasmin, who acted as Colour Sergeant for the weekend Remembrance service, added: “Having the chance to represent the CCF, as well as remember those who have given their lives to service, both past and present, is something we all take great pride in.”
The Chorale choir sang Crossing the Bar by Hubert Parry and Year 10 pupil Dominic played The Last Post on the trumpet. The service concluded by laying wreaths and wooden crosses at the War Memorial.
Pupil Heads of School, Jiya and Henry (below), reflected: “Remembrance Day is an invaluable opportunity for us as a society and school to reflect on all conflicts, past and present, and to express gratitude for peace in our country, which is what those millions died for. As Heads of school, we feel honoured to be able to contribute to such a poignant event and to have been given the opportunity to directly pay our respects.”
Colour Sergeant, Sara, added: “As we all gathered for a moment of silence, the Highgate community displayed a powerful sense of unity. The collective demonstration of respect and gratitude truly embodies the spirit of Remembrance. Today, as we honoured the selfless commitment of many who put their lives on the line, we look forward with hope and commitment towards a better future.”
