Throughout the year, Pre-Prep and Junior School pupils visit local care homes to socialise with the elderly residents, broadening their sense of community and discovering intergenerational connections.
During their weekly visits to Hammerson House care home, children and residents enjoy the opportunity to exchange stories about their lives and build companionship. The visits also involve fun activities such as board games and puzzles or sharing their music and drama skills.
A new partnership with Signature Care Home has enabled every Year 6 and Reception child to take part in this important initiative. During a recent Pre-Prep visit, children gave a heartwarming performance of songs, bringing smiles and applause from their delighted audience. The children’s energy was contagious – especially during a lively song about a buzzing bee! Afterwards, children spent time chatting with the residents, sharing stories, laughter, and even speaking in their home languages together.
On another occasion, Year 6 pupils teamed up with residents for a spirited game of bingo. The children helped call out the numbers and worked alongside residents, creating a fun and joyful atmosphere for all.
Andrew Roberts, Partnership Coordinator at Highgate School, commented: “Bringing the children to the care home gives them a chance to connect with older generations and develop empathy and understanding. It’s a meaningful way to broaden their perspective and appreciate the importance of kindness and community.”
Rakhee Popat, Client Liaison Manager for Signature Care Home, added: “These visits bring so much joy and energy into our home. It’s special for me to watch the children and residents interact. It’s a reminder of how powerful simple moments of connection can be!”
