We are delighted to report that Y13 pupil, Yoni, has secured 3rd place in his weight category of the National Weightlifting Championships.

Earlier this month, Yoni competed in his first ever British Age Group Weightlifting Championships in Birmingham, achieving a superb 3rd place finish in the 65kg category against some of the best young lifters in the country.

Yoni enthused: “I’m very happy to have reached a national competition in this sport. Winning a medal is a bonus, but the work I’ve put in to get here has led me to develop strength, explosive power, mobility and the mental fortitude to keep going. If you’re on the fence about starting to weightlift, or any sport for that matter, just make a start. It can take you anywhere so long as you keep turning up.”

Olympic Weightlifting is offered at Highgate as both a curriculum sport option and through our co-curricular programme, led by Ms Solomou, an athletic development specialist and strength & conditioning coach who works with elite, international, Olympic, and world-class athletes across athletics, football, netball, martial arts and more. Through her guidance, pupils gain access to methods usually reserved for top-level performers while developing transferable skills such as resilience, confidence, focus, and composure under pressure.

Reflecting on Yoni’s achievement, Ms Solomou said: “I have been incredibly impressed with Yoni’s development and maturity at such an early stage of his competitive journey. To achieve a podium finish at national level is testament to his perseverance and positive attitude. He is an excellent role model for his peers at Highgate.”
