During the summer, Highgate welcomed 148 pupils from 18 partner schools to take part in our annual Summer School programme. With two options available to cater for Junior and Senior aged pupils, these popular courses help to inspire and support young people in the local area to pursue academic subjects at the next level.
The Senior Chrysalis Summer School for pupils in Y10 and Y12 was led by 29 teachers from Highgate Senior School and London Academy of Excellence, Tottenham. Subject tutorials in English, Maths, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, History, Geography and Psychology explored content beyond the curriculum to inspire continuing study: For Y12 students, that meant going through university style content whereas Y10 students were tasked with A Level taster classes.
Elsewhere on the course, pupils enjoyed career and employment sessions, alongside advice on preparing for higher education. Pupils had an informative talk from Cambridge University as well as a UCAS day, administered by Nottingham University, who offered one to one advice on writing personal statements, and skills for admissions tests at Russell Group universities.
A highlight of the Y10 summer school was their trip to Oxford University, where students experienced a mock academic tutorial and seminar, along with a tour of Lady Margaret Hall.
One of the Y10 attendees enthused about their experience, saying “The two career sessions were insightful in helping me plan my future to a large extent. I feel as if they opened up doors I had previously not known existed.”
The Y4 summer school offered a range of engaging lessons in core subjects, along with exploring new subjects like DTE and Drama. Elsewhere, Y5 pupils participated in a two-day sport-focused camp led by Highgate’s Sport and Exercise teachers.
Pupils and parents enthused about their experience, noting the valuable opportunity to make friends from other local schools whilst learning in a fun and relaxed environment. One parent says how their son “continues to talk about his time with you all and his newfound love for Maths!!! Which is amazing as he’s struggled with Maths in the past.”
