As Summer term begins, our Junior School looks back on a lovely – and busy! – Lent term 2019.

One would be forgiven for thinking Lent term was all about World Book Day and charity week, as both remain large events in our Junior School calendar! World Book Day, of course, saw staff and pupils dress as their favourite characters, while charity week raised money for Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospice, as pupils undertook a sponsored walk with Tottenham Hotspurs player, Michel Vorm.

Yet, even more activities were taking place during the latter part of our Lent term! First we had the HAFTAs, where Year 5 performed their very own BAFTA-inspired award ceremony which even included iMovie trailers made by pupils. As Year 5 Maya said: ‘Watching all the fun trailers was entertaining!’ Yet taking part in the ceremony was also entertaining, as Lexi explains: ‘The best bit was interacting with my on-stage partner – he messed up a few lines!’

Our Junior School then hosted Francesca Simon, author of the much-loved Horrid Henry series. The first of these laugh-out loud books was published 25 years ago and 2019 will also see the twenty-fifth book in the series published! In honour of this auspicious occasion, Francesca Simon talked to Year 3 Highgate pupils, plus visiting pupils from other local schools.

Finally, pupils from Year 5 and 6 took part in the final round of our annual house debating competition with the motion ‘This House believes that the British Monarchy should be abolished’. Well done to all participating pupils for expressing their ideas clearly and with conviction, and congratulations to Hazel for winning this year’s competition.

Our Junior School now springs forward into the Summer term, with lots to look forward to, learn about, and enjoy.
