Jazz music at Highgate School

Highgate believes that everyone is capable of being a musician and our Music Department offers an aspirational and creative environment that is open to everyone. We teach pupils from Year 7 to 9 and offer GCSE and A Level Music courses. Pupils develop knowledge and skills through study, creation and performance across a range of musical instruments, styles and genres – from classical to contemporary.

Academic music lessons are small in size and take place in bespoke classrooms, with access to facilities and equipment such as a Mac Music Technology Suite. We run masterclasses, workshops and free theory classes for pupils studying different Grades (subject to demand). Individual paid music lessons are also available in over 20 instruments and vocals with specialist visiting teachers.

Pupils have plenty of opportunity to practice and hone their performance skills, with regular concerts in school or external venues, and over 35 musical ensemble rehearsals each week. Popular events include our Young Musician of the Year awards, Contemporary Music Showcase, and House Singing competition. Even if pupils decide not to pursue music exams, we encourage participation in co-curricular activities outside the classroom, from taking part in choirs to musicals.

A Level Music is excellent preparation for university, employment and life. Although our course of study is especially suitable for those who aspire to read Music at university, it will also appeal to pupils who want to further their involvement and skills in music for its own sake. Many of the learned skills are relevant to further study in other disciplines and are valued for success in the wider world of work.
