Highgate encourages all to travel sustainably. We aim to reduce the number of cars travelling to and from our School, thus improving congestion and air quality locally.
We encourage our pupils and staff, where possible, to walk or cycle to Highgate and organise several walking bus services which allows pupils to travel safely and socially to school together. We encourage safe bicycle use amongst our School community and our Year 10 pupils, through their lobbying project, are in contact with the local council regarding better cycling infrastructure in the area. We run a bicycle maintenance activity for Senior School pupils, while staff can join the Cycle to Work scheme. (This salary-sacrifice arrangement enables staff to make tax and NI savings when purchasing a bike).
We offer a school bus service for our Junior and Senior School pupils which, in 2018, cut approximately 13,000 individual car journeys to and from our School. We received a ‘School of Excellence’ award from Transport for London, in recognition of our School bus service success and other activities to reduce reliance on cars in December 2018. This award, given to Highgate ahead of over 1600 London schools, means we are now a Gold STARS school for our efforts to increase sustainable travel.
We currently operates three School bus routes and each bus is tracked, allowing parents to see its location via their PC or smartphone. We strive to continually optimise routes, maximise number of users and introduce buses operating from new geographical locations.

Highgate is served by the following London buses: 143, 210, 214 and 271 (to Highgate Village), W5 (to Hornsey Lane – five minutes’ walk), 43 and 134 (to Archway and Highgate stations).
Highgate is on the High Barnet branch of the Northern Line.
From Highgate station, it is about eight minutes’ walk uphill to our Senior School.
To walk from Highgate underground station, take the escalator to the Archway Road exit, go out through the door and turn right. At the traffic lights turn left into Southwood Lane (uphill) and at the mini roundabout go straight ahead for our Senior School (or turn right into The Park, leading to Broadlands Road for our Pre-Prep or Junior School).
For our Senior School, continue straight ahead for another 500 metres, then turn right into Castle Yard and left onto North Road. Our entrance is 50 metres along on the left.
For our Pre-Prep or Junior School, having entered The Park, continue straight ahead through the pedestrian walkway and cross the zebra crossing into Broadlands Road. After 500 metres there is a T-junction with Bishopswood Road. Turn left at the pillar box and our Pre-Prep entrance is 50 metres on the right and the entrance to our Junior School is 200 metres beyond that.
Highgate Village can be approached from the north via the A1 or A1000, and then Highgate North Hill.
From Kentish Town, use Highgate West Hill. From Holloway and the south, use Highgate Hill. From Muswell Hill, use Muswell Hill Road and then Southwood Lane.
For Senior School appointments, a parking space can sometimes be reserved, on request, inside our School gates on North Road.
