Donating to Highgate

There is no such thing as too small a gift: every gift makes a difference.

“I received an excellent education at Highgate between 1939 and 1947, in spite of difficulties caused by World War II. Fortunately, I was awarded a scholarship which helped financially. As a small return for this good fortune, I am pleased to contribute, by way of a legacy, a little towards the provision of a bursary for a deserving boy or girl who, like myself, would otherwise be unable to have an education at Highgate.”

—An OC explains his decision to remember Highgate in his Will.

Maximising the value of your financial gift

There are a number of ways to maximise the value of your gift:

Gift Aid

Highgate is a registered charity (charity number 312765). Gifts can be made tax-efficient in the UK by checking the Gift Aid declaration box when giving online or by completing the declaration on your gift form. This enables us to claim an additional 25% from the Government for your gift, while higher rate tax-payers can themselves claim 20% tax relief on their gross donation. Please use the Gift Aid calculator to find out more.

Gifts of shares

Giving via shares is one of the most tax efficient ways of making a charitable gift. If you would like to have a confidential conversation about making a gift of shares, please contact For a confidential conversation about making a gift of shares, please contact our Campaign Director, on email: development@highgateschool.org.uk.

Matched giving

Many companies will help support charities through a matched giving scheme, whereby they will match gifts donated by their employees. Some companies have formal schemes for matched funding, while others may consider each request on its own merits. In many cases, participating companies will match an employee’s donation pound for pound up to a set amount. A number of organisations will even double-match.

If you are interested in donating through the matching gift scheme, please contact your Human Resources department. By using this scheme you can make your gift worth even more to Highgate.

For any queries or for further information, please contact our Campaign Director by email or telephone: 020 8347 4431.

Donating by leaving a legacy

Writing a Will is, quite rightly, very personal. In making your Will, having naturally considered your family and loved ones first, we hope that you may then consider supporting Highgate. By remembering Highgate in your Will, you have the opportunity to make an incredible difference to the School, the impact of which could be felt for generations to come.

As Highgate School is a charity (registered charity no. 312765), gifts made either during your lifetime or through your Will are generally free of tax if you are a UK taxpayer. (Please note: this is general guidance only and we recommend you seek independent legal and tax advice when making or amending your Will).

Unrestricted bequests enable us to use your legacy gift wherever the need is greatest at our School, whatever its current priorities, and give us useful flexibility. However you may choose to direct your bequest towards a particular fund, for example our bursaries programme or our building funds.

We understand that your Will is private and you may not wish to tell us that you are intending to support Highgate with a legacy. However, if you would like to share your plans, we encourage you to do so and will then invite you to become a member of The 1565 Society. We hold an annual reception at which all 1565 Society members are thanked for their generosity. We want to celebrate the support we receive but we respect your wishes regarding your privacy wholeheartedly.

For a confidential conversation about leaving a legacy to Highgate, please contact our Campaign Director, on email: development@highgateschool.org.uk.
