The arts

We encourage our pupils to enjoy art, music and drama from an early age through our curriculum and co-curricular activities.

MUSIC

At Highgate, we have a range of musical activities that encourages pupils to interact with different instruments and musical styles from an early age.

Within the classroom, pupils have weekly music lessons with a specialist teacher. Our curriculum uses techniques such as singing games, call and response, keeping a beat and movement to music. From Year 1, pupils can take additional violin and cello lessons, and recorder lessons are part of our curriculum from Year 2.

Pupils share what they’ve learnt in assemblies, shows, an annual concert for all our string players and a summer concert for any pupil learning an instrument outside of school.

‘Excellent teaching from the specialist drama and music teachers within the Pre-Prep who have really encouraged and inspired my children to participate fully.’

DRAMA

Pupils have weekly drama lessons with a specialist teacher, with the aim of developing confidence and an ability to express themselves through different characters, stories and themes.

There are several performances throughout the year, including assemblies, a Winter show and end of year celebration which parents are welcome to attend.

ART

Our pupils develop their creative abilities and confidence to work with a range of media, materials and techniques based around different themes and artistic styles. As part of our project learning, we invite guest artists in to run workshops to demonstrate different skills, with pupils making their own artwork to display in project exhibitions, around the school and to take home! And our co-curricular activities include arts and crafts and fashion design clubs.
