Beyond the classroom

We pride ourselves on the enthusiastic way that our pupils engage with our extensive programme of co-curricular activities.

In the Pre-Prep School, we offer a wide range of clubs and activities that will appeal to our youngest pupils and make their first experience of school not only fun and exciting, but one that helps them build friendships, confidence and a sense of independence.

We are exceptionally fortunate when it comes to sport at Highgate with extensive facilities and excellent staff.

We ensure each Pre-Prep class visits at least one place of interest, each term, connected to their classroom projects.

Across Highgate, we aim to inspire our pupils to study and to work creatively. This goes beyond the classroom, with exciting co-curricular opportunities in all of the creative arts – music, drama, and art.

At Highgate, our co-curricular offerings continue to evolve and develop in response to the changing needs of our pupils and the world around us.

We aim to undertake at least one visit or trip per term, connected to the termly projects that all our Pre-Prep classes follow to add to our learning experience.

Recent trips include:

  • Paradise Park
  • Roald Dahl Museum
  • Royal Gunpowder Mills
  • Tolmer’s Scout Camp
  • Royal Albert Hall
  • London Zoo
  • Tower of London
  • Kenwood House

Our Pre-Prep pupils can choose to take part in a wide range of clubs during lunchtime and after-school. Our most popular examples include:

  • Football Club
  • Gardening Club
  • Litter picking Club
  • Philosophy Club
  • Music and Drama Club
  • Running Club
  • Scooting Club
  • Year 1 Chess Club
  • Year 2 Science and DT Club

Throughout our school year, our pupils and staff support a number of different charities, with charitable events including Children in Need, Jeans for Genes, and Sport Relief.

Alongside these events, our Year 1 and Year 2 pupils do an annual charity sale, where they make products to sell to their parents in order to raise money for our chosen charities. In recent years, pupils have sold badges, bags, pen pots and greetings cards.

All Highgate pupils also take part in the biennial sponsored walk, which raises in the region of £80,000 for Great Lakes High School in Uganda, which Highgate has supported since its foundation. As a long walk across Hampstead Heath may prove too much for our youngest pupils, our nearby School field provides a good location to enable our Pre-Prep pupils to also take part!

Our Pre-Prep pupils take part in a range of events throughout the year, ranging from Harvest Festival in our Michaelmas term, a Christmas show in December and a Summer term show before the holidays.
