Last Friday, Highgate School hosted the first ‘Maths Bash’. 40 pupils from partner schools and 40 Highgate pupils spent the day listening to and delivering Mathematical micro-talks.

The day started with a pain au chocolat fuelled mingle in the Sir Martin Gilbert library where pupils pondered problems set in advance by the speakers. There were 19 pupils speaking on subjects as diverse as Number Theory, Graph Theory and Artificial Intelligence.

One of the highlights of the day was a lunchtime talk from Imre Leader, Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge University which was attended by pupils from year 9 to 13. His subject was ‘Clueless Voting’ and his accessible, enthusiastic and enlightening talk was thoroughly enjoyed by pupils and teachers.

The day was a complete success, and many thanks to Damon (13EG), Gianmarco (13GH) and Thalia (13FG) who conceived of and organised the event.
