LUNCHTIME ACTIVITIES ENCOURAGE SAFE SUSTAINABLE TRAVEL

Highgate Pre-Prep pupils have been practising their active travel and road safety skills with the introduction of two exciting and fun lunchtime clubs - Cycle Club and Scooter Club.

Each week our Year 2 pupils have been improving their handling and learning how to begin their journeys, safely cross roads and identify hazards on their travels. Both clubs aim to increase pupil confidence at using a bicycle or scooter, so that they can feel happy traveling to and from school in this sustainable way, instead of by private car.

Elliot Prescott, Highgate’s Transport Logistics Manager, explains: ‘Our clubs are an enjoyable and educational way for our pupils to improve their independence, as well as incorporate exercise into their daily routine. Both cycling and scooting are popular modes of travel for children of this age group, and it’s important that they are able to improve their skills and confidence in a supervised environment.

‘Since we began offering these activities in our Lent term, they’ve been incredibly popular and led to a steady increase in Year 2 pupils travelling actively to Highgate every day. This has helped reduce car travel to and from Highgate, as well as improve the quality of the air we breathe and contribute to a safer and healthier environment for pupils to study.’
