Highgate’s Geography Department focuses on 21st century global challenges, in order to prepare for an ever-changing world. There has never been a more relevant time to study Geography, with growing interest in issues such as climate change, migration, environmental degradation and social cohesion.
Geography is taught to all pupils from Years 7 to 9 with the option to study at GCSE level. The subject aims to develop and challenge our perceptions and understanding of the human and physical environment, and the ways in which people interact with each other and the natural world.
For A Level Geography students, we seek to engender: knowledge and understanding of the planet and its peoples; a lasting awareness of the complex and dynamic world around us; sensitivity, tolerance and empathy towards all others; and critical and independent thinking.
Fieldwork is an important part of our curriculum and we undertake cross-curricular Key Stage Three trips and residential data-collection fieldwork courses both in the UK and abroad. Highgate’s co-curricular Outdoor Education programme is another useful outlet for pupils interested in exploring natural environments.
