Highgate’s Mathematics Department strives to ensure every one of our pupils becomes the best mathematician they can be. All pupils study Mathematics as part of the core curriculum, culminating in the GCSE exam in Year 11 and further study at A Level. We are proud of our pupils’ success rate and in helping those who find it difficult to develop confidence in the subject, or achieve strong examination results.
Our teaching has a strong emphasis on problem solving and pupils will be asked to use their Mathematical techniques to solve applied mathematical problems in areas such as statistics and geometry. Pupils who are particularly interested in Mathematics are provided with frequent access to challenging problems and a high percentage enter UK Maths Trust competitions and Olympiads, often with outstanding results.
A Level Mathematics remains a popular subject choice in the Sixth Form, particularly if students also wish to take A Level Further Mathematics. Our world is increasingly quantitative and Mathematics is important across a range of academic disciplines and professions. Our principle means of teaching is Socratic, with our aim being that students discover all new mathematics through exploration of new and interesting ideas or questions.
A Level Further Mathematics is undoubtedly a challenge but that is also one of the main reasons why it is so highly regarded, and the reason why those who have successfully completed the course are proud of their achievements.
