Politics

Our Politics Department encourages interest and engagement in the fast changing and unpredictable world of politics. Taught as an A Level subject in our Sixth Form, Politics not only adds considerably to a knowledge of current affairs but also develops analysis and evaluation skills, and experience in presenting arguments logically and persuasively.

We teach three main themes: UK government and politics; Political ideologies and US government and politics, as well as developing ideas of how society should be run through the study of socialism, liberalism, conservatism, and feminism.

Wider international perspectives are brought in wherever possible, for example, Trump’s presidency and the implications of Brexit have naturally formed part of our recent class discussions. It is essential that students are interested in current affairs and ready to keep up-to-date with the latest global political developments.

Our Department runs co-curricular activities around key political events, such as mock elections/referendums, and our magazine, The Arbiter, gives students the opportunity to write and edit articles. The long-standing and popular Masaryk Society holds debates and talks from high profile political figures and we organise external trips to related events or venues.

Many of our Sixth Formers intend to study a politics-related discipline at university but it is also a good foundation for any essay subject.
